There are many ways to build links, including; submitting to directories, submitting to industry association websites, requesting links from related sites (and giving a reciprocal link), purchasing links, trading links and providing something that gives other websites A REASON to link to you. All of these methods are extremely time consuming, as demonstrated in the methodolgy below for getting a reciprocal link established.
Standard Reciprocal Linking Methodology
Reciprocal linking is theoretically not that difficult but implementing it certainly takes a huge amount of time.
Typically, here are the steps you need to take:
- Create a file to store a list of potential sites to link to you with their details gathered using the following methods:
- Do a search for your focus keywords to find sites that are related to yours but are not direct competitors. Add these sites to your list.
- Do a backlink check on your competitors - this tells you sites that link to them. Find sites that would link to you as well. Add these sites to your list.
- Visit these sites and see if they actually will exchange links and whether they themselves have good link popularity (if they don't have good link popularity themselves, exchanging links with them will not increase your link popularity).
- Remove low link popularity sites from your list, or make them lower priority.
- Once you decide which sites you want to exchange links with, you need to find out exactly how that site wants you to link to it from your site.
- Once your list is refined, you then need to manually add a link to these site from your site using the prescribed manner requested by the subject sites.
- Find out the contact information of the owner/administrator of each website and send them a personalized email requesting that he/she adds a link to your site in return.
- In many cases, you will not be able to locate the contact information of the owner simply because the owner has not published any contact information on the site. In that case, all the effort that you had put into evaluating whether or not the site is suitable for exchanging links will have been a waste of time.
- If you do manage to locate the contact information of the owner and submit a link request, you need to wait and see whether this site is willing to exchange links with you.
- If the site is not willing to link to you, you need to remove the link to the site from your site. Once again, all the effort that you had put into evaluating the site, linking to it and sending an email to the owner will have been a waste of time.
- You have to repeat the same process all over again for the next site that you want to exchange links with.
However, even after you have got a few good links pointing to your site, your work is far from over. Your competitors are doing exactly what you are doing as well!
So, in order to stay ahead of your competition, you need to constantly search for new sites with whom to exchange links.
As you have probably understood by now, reciprocal linking, if done manually, can quickly become a full-time job for you!
And worst of all, the job is downright tedious and boring! Wouldn't you rather spend your time growing your business, improving your products, servicing your customers and finding out new and innovative ways of promoting your site?
